Diabetic foot problems should not be dismissed as simply age-related issues
Many foot and ankle surgeries are now performed using minimally invasive techniques, which involve smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery
KARIMNAGAR, JULY 28, 2026: Foot and Ankle problems are very common. However, many people tend to ignore them until the pain becomes severe.
Heel pain, frequent ankle sprains, changes in foot shape, sports-related injuries, and diabetic foot problems should not be dismissed as simply age-related issues.
Consulting a specialist at an early stage can help prevent serious complications and even permanent disability, said Dr D B Aditya Somayaji, consultant orthopedic surgeon and foot and ankle surgery specialist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hi Tec City, Hyderabad.
Talking to newsmen here at Yashoda Medical Centre in Karimnagar town on Tuesday, Dr Aditya said with advanced imaging and diagnostic techniques at Yashoda Hospital, the foot and ankle conditions can now be identified accurately, allowing personalised treatment for every patient. Many foot and ankle surgeries are now performed using minimally invasive techniques, which involve smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery, he added.
The state-of-the-art implants and 3D printing technology have made it possible to effectively treat complex fractures, foot deformities and bone defects, he said, adding that in selected patients, joint-preserving surgeries can help maintain natural joint function. When necessary, ankle replacement surgery (total ankle replacement) can significantly improve mobility and quality of life, he pointed out.
Dr Aditya said modern physiotherapy and rehabilitation programmes enable patients to return more quickly to their daily activities, work and sports. He also said wearing appropriate footwear, regular foot examinations for people with diabetes, and seeking medical advice without ignoring persistent pain can prevent many serious foot and ankle complications.
