
HYDERABAD, AUGUST 20, 2025: The Hyderabad Branch Office of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organised a one-day Capacity-Building Programme on Labour Safety at the Workplace for senior officials of the Labour Department at its office in Moula Ali, Hyderabad. The programme was conducted in association with the State Labour Department, Government of Telangana, to enhance awareness, capacity, and compliance with safety standards among enforcement officials.
A total of 35 senior officials participated, including the Joint Commissioners of Labour – Ms G. Sunitha, Mr Shyam Sunder Reddy, and Mr M. Rajendra Prasad, who represented various districts across Telangana. Their presence underlined the importance being given by the Government of Telangana to workplace safety and occupational health.
The programme was inaugurated and guided by Mr P.V. Srikanth, Director and Head, BIS Hyderabad Branch Office, who emphasised that workplace safety is not only a statutory requirement but also a moral responsibility towards workers. He highlighted that BIS standards are not merely technical documents but instruments of transformation which help prevent accidents, safeguard lives, and ensure a productive and globally competitive workforce.
The sessions were coordinated by Mr Rakesh Tanneeru, Joint Director, and Mr K. Kavin, Deputy Director, with technical inputs from expert resource persons Mr Prabhath Kumar and Ms. Bhavana Kasturi.
The training programme covered a wide spectrum of topics, including:
- Proper selection, use, and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to minimize hazards
- Sector-specific safety measures to provide clear guidance and prevent workplace confusion
- Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (IS/ISO 45001:2018) for creating safe and compliant workplaces
- Construction safety codes related to excavation, demolition, and structural works to prevent accidents in high-risk activities
- Safety colours and standardized signs for better communication and accident prevention at worksites
Through case studies, practical examples, and interactive discussions, officials gained valuable insights into adopting BIS standards effectively in their inspection and enforcement work.
The expected outcomes of this programme include reduction of workplace accidents, stronger enforcement of safety laws, improved worker health and welfare, and the promotion of a proactive safety culture across Telangana. The collaboration between BIS and the State Labour Department also aims to empower officials with knowledge and tools to identify risks, ensure compliance, and safeguard workers’ lives.
BIS Hyderabad reaffirmed its commitment to working hand-in-hand with government departments, industry stakeholders, and enforcement agencies to promote standards as instruments of safety, quality, and sustainable development.
