RAJANNA-SIRCILLA, AUGUST 07, 2025: India is celebrating the 11th National Handloom Day on Thursday, recognising the country’s rich weaving traditions and the skilled artisans who keep them alive. The celebration honours the historic ‘Swadeshi Movement’ launched on August 7, 1905, which promoted indigenous industries, especially handlooms, as a form of resistance to British rule.
On the occasion of National Handloom Day, grand celebrations were held at the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Women’s Degree College, located in Shatrajupalli village, Vemulawada Mandal.
As part of the programme, students from the Design and Technology Department organised a special exhibition showcasing garments creatively upcycled from old handloom fabrics. They later captivated the audience with a catwalk, displaying their handmade designs. The event stood as a testament to the students’ creativity and their respect for handloom traditions.
The event was graced by College Principal K Lavanya, Vice Principal B. Sumalatha, Head of the Design and Technology Department Fauzia Bhanu, faculty members Poojitha and Pallavi, along with other staff and enthusiastic participation from students.
On this occasion, Principal Lavanya stated, “The handloom industry reflects the rich cultural heritage of our country. Promoting such traditions should be considered a social responsibility by every student.”
She further highlighted that the four-year Design and Technology course offered completely free of cost at TGSWRDC(W), Vemulawada, is conducted with the support of NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology). Upon successful completion of the course, students even have the opportunity to pursue direct Ph.D. programs, and she encouraged students to make the most of this unique opportunity.
