
An Enriching Event Organised in the College’s Medicinal Plant Garden
KARIMNAGAR, NOVEMBER 15, 2025: The Department of Botany, SRR Government Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Karimnagar, organised the traditional Karthika Vanabhojanalu with academic and cultural significance on the college premises on Saturday. The programme was conducted under the esteemed guidance and supervision of Thiru Kovel Srinivas, Head of the Department of Botany, who emphasised the importance of integrating ecological awareness with cultural traditions.
As part of the initiative, the event was held in the college’s Medicinal Plant Garden, which serves as a living laboratory for students and a vital resource for promoting environmental consciousness. This academic year, the Botany Department has introduced and been maintaining several rare and valuable medicinal and spice plants. These include Amla (Usiri), Nutmeg, Mace, Bay Leaf, Almond, Sapota, Neem, All-Spice Plant, Shatavari, Adathoda vasica, Clove, Brahma Kamalam, Insulin Plant, Red Sandalwood, Carom Seeds (Vamu), Black Pepper, Cardamom, Rubber Vine, Litchi, and many other species of ethnobotanical importance.
The Karthika Vanabhojanalu programme was organised to create awareness among the students about the cultural significance of the Karthika month, the medicinal value of plants, sustainable ecological practices, and the need for conservation of biodiversity.
Faculty members of the Department of Botany — Routu Radhakrishna, Mohammad Taher Hussain, Padala Thirupathi, Kandikoori Kalajyothi, Bunga Thirupathi, Mohammad Tajuddin, and Asampalli Swaroopa Rani — actively participated and coordinated various activities associated with the event. M.Sc. Botany students also contributed significantly to the planning, management, and successful execution of the programme.

The event was graced by distinguished guests, including the Principal, Prof. Kalvakunta Ramakrishna, the State General Secretary of the Government Degree College Teachers Association, Kadaru Surender Reddy, the Staff Club Secretary, Mamidipalli Satya Prakash, and the Vice Principal, Tallapalli Raju. The dignitaries interacted with the students, appreciated their enthusiasm, and highlighted the relevance of medicinal plants in contemporary health systems, traditional knowledge systems, and research-based learning.
Speaking on the occasion, the Principal commended the Department of Botany for its continuous efforts in developing the Medicinal Plant Garden as an important educational resource. He acknowledged that such initiatives enrich student understanding and provide experiential learning opportunities beyond the classroom. The chief guests also congratulated the faculty and students for upholding cultural heritage while promoting scientific awareness.
The Department extended heartfelt thanks to the college administration, invited guests, teaching staff, and students for their cooperation, support, and active participation, which contributed to the grand success of the event.
