HYDERABAD, APRIL 13, 2026: In a significant move to fortify India’s self-reliance in drug discovery and medical technology, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has officially upgraded and renamed its flagship National Animal Resource Facility for Biomedical Research (ICMR-NARFBR) as National Institute for Pre-Clinical Research (NIPCR). Located in Genome Valley, Hyderabad, the NIPCR focuses on advancing pre-clinical research. While often perceived in the past as a specialized animal resource centre, this transition to NIPCR signifies a strategic shift from a specialized animal resource centre to a comprehensive hub for pre-clinical research and translational science.
NIPCR utilises a sophisticated dual approach to research namely:
- Advanced in Vivo Models: Utilizing animal models that closely mirror human physiology for high-fidelity data.
- Cutting-Edge NAMs & MPS: Integrating ‘New Approach Methodologies’ (NAMs), including Micro physiological Systems (MPS), cell and organoid-based assays, and alternative models designed to enhance accuracy while reducing traditional testing reliance.
NIPCR serves as the critical bridge between laboratory discovery and human clinical trials. By providing a world-class platform for testing drugs, vaccines, biologicals, medical devices, and CGT (Cell and Gene Therapies), the institute will be instrumental in bringing “Made in India” healthcare solutions to life. ICMR-NIPCR will support academia, industry, and startups by providing infrastructure and scientific expertise for validation of biomedical innovations. As part of the Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, NIPCR aligns with national priorities aimed at strengthening India’s biomedical research ecosystem.
