KARIMNAGAR, OCTOBER 17, 2025: The AI-enhanced Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s disease highlights how AI-driven platforms are making the procedure more precise and effective by improving the targeting of the stimulation. The DBS itself is a surgical treatment that implants a device to send electrical signals to the brain, alleviating motor symptoms like tremors, stiffness, and slowness, and can also help reduce medication needs, said Dr Rajesh Alogulu, DBS specialist and neurosurgeon, at Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City, Hyderabad.
Talking to newsmen at Yashoda Health Centre in Karimnagar town on Friday, Dr Rajesh enlightened about the importance of surgery for Parkinson’s disease, which is a disease is a movement disorder of the nervous system that worsens over time. The nervous system is a network of nerve cells that controls many parts of the body, including movement.
Symptoms start slowly. The first symptom may be a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand or sometimes a foot or the jaw. Tremor is common in Parkinson’s disease. But the disorder also may cause stiffness, slowing of movement and trouble with balance that raises the risk of falls.
In the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, your face may show little or no expression. Your arms may not swing when you walk. Your speech may become soft or slurred. Symptoms get worse over time.
Although Parkinson’s disease can’t be cured, medicines may help improve symptoms. Sometimes, a healthcare professional may suggest surgery to help control parts of the brain. This surgery may help lessen symptoms, he added.
As part of DBS, a pacemaker-like system is implanted. It includes electrodes in the brain, an extension wire, and a neurostimulator (battery pack). The electrodes deliver electrical impulses to specific brain areas, which help to regulate and improve the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The DBS reduces major symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and slowness. Can help patients extend the time they are “on,” meaning they have better motor control, and reduce “off” time when symptoms worsen, he said and added that the DBS may decrease the amount of medication a patient needs.
Dr Rajesh said that the Yashoda Hospital, Hitech, Hyderabad, had set a record in the country by performing the highest number of 1,500 DBS surgeries and helped Parkinson’s patients.
