KARIMNAGAR, OCTOBER 05, 2024: Bathukamma, the festival of flowers, is celebrated with a difference at the Jyothishmathi Institute of Technology and Sciences (autonomous) on the outskirts of Karimnagar town on Saturday.
The girl students of the college stacked different varieties of flowers in a conical shape by using flowers such as Cassia (thangedu), luffa (bera), celosia (gunugu), nelumbo (thamara) cucurbita (gummadi), marigold (banthi), crossandra (kanakambaram), ixora (ramabanam), hibiscus (mandhara), and so on are collected and splendidly arranged enticingly.
Incidentally, they had added another social message on every Bathukamma. They put up posters appealing the people to save Girl Child, Say no to Drugs, save the environment from pollution, and plant more trees and other messages for the betterment of the future. The boys had helped the girl students prepare the Bathukammas by arranging the flowers and cutting them accordingly. A group of students designed Bathukamma by arranging the flowers in the shape of temple and won accolades for their creativity.
Later, they came in a procession from each classroom to the sprawling grounds and placed all the Bathukammas at the centre and offered prayers to Goddess Gauri and danced around them by singing traditional dances. They also played dandiya and captivated the audience. JITS Chairman Juvvadi Sagar Rao, Secretary J Sumith Sai, Principal Dr KS Rao, Dean (Academics) Dr PK Vaishali and others participated in the celebrations.
The JITS chairman has distributed cash prizes to the best-designed Bathukamma with social messages. The first prize winners are from CSE-C final year, second prize winners CSM-A third year, third prize winner ECE-A fourth year and consolation prize winners are from first year CSE-D.
On this occasion, the girl students said that they were excited to participate in the annual Bathukamma festivities with much pomp and gaiety. N Nithya Sri, CSM fourth year, said that this is the season when we get lots of flowers after monsoon rains which are beneficial to womenfolk. Each flower has its own medicinal values and their touch or smell have a healing impact, she opined.
D Ashritha, another final year student, said that the Bathukamma, the festival of flowers, is celebrated only in Telangana state for the protection of Mother Nature in many forms. Like, after immersion of the Bathukamma in the water bodies, the water would be purified with the medicinal values of the flowers and make the water fresh and murky-free. Besides, the immersion of different varieties of flowers along with their seeds would also help of the transportation of seeds of growth in other parts of the state due to the flow of water, she said.
