PARADIP, (ODISHA), MARCH 07, 2026: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a new sulphuric acid plant at the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) facility in Paradip, Odisha, marking a major step toward strengthening India’s fertiliser production capacity and advancing agricultural self-reliance. Built with an investment of about ₹750 crore, the new facility has a production capacity of around 2,000 metric tonnes per day and incorporates modern technology designed to reduce environmental impact.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister highlighted that IFFCO stands as one of the most successful examples of the cooperative model in India. He emphasised that nearly five crore farmers across the country are the real owners of the organisation and the benefits of its earnings ultimately reach them. According to him, the cooperative structure ensures that profits and growth directly support farmers, reinforcing the principle that cooperatives are institutions owned and governed by their members.
Shah also noted that the expansion of the Paradip unit will help reduce India’s dependence on imported raw materials used in fertiliser production and contribute to the national goal of self-reliance. Since being taken over by IFFCO from a private entity, the plant’s production capacity has increased significantly, transforming it into a major fertiliser production hub. The initiative aligns with the broader vision of strengthening the cooperative sector and empowering farmers through technology, innovation and cooperative-led growth.
