NALGONDA, SEPTEMBER 17, 2026: Marking the historic significance of Telangana Liberation Day, Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) here on Thursday held a solemn and inspiring flag-hoisting ceremony with Registrar Prof. Koppula Anji Reddy unfurling the national tricolour in the presence of faculty, administrative staff, and a large gathering of students.
The programme conducted in accordance with State-wide observance of September 17 as Telangana Praja Palana Dinotsavam, began with the ceremonial unfurling of the flag amid the singing of the National Anthem. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Reddy saluted the martyrs of the 1948 struggle that led to the end of the Nizam’s rule and the integration of Hyderabad State into the Indian Union. Addressing the gathering, the Registrar recalled the sacrifices of the people of Telangana during the anti-Nizam movement and Operation Polo, emphasising that the day symbolises not only political liberation but also the awakening of democratic values and social justice in the region. He noted that universities, as custodians of knowledge and nation-building, have a special responsibility to keep alive the spirit of this historic milestone through education, research, and community engagement.
Prof. Koppula Anji Reddy used the occasion to deliver a focused message to the student community, linking the legacy of the liberation struggle to their present-day duties as young citizens and scholars. Urging the students to internalise the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity enshrined in the Constitution, describing them as the true inheritance of the 1948 liberation, the Registrar called upon students to treat their studies as a national duty, stressing that excellence in learning and research is the most meaningful tribute to the martyrs who fought for a free and integrated Telangana. Encouraging students to actively participate in community service, rural outreach, and value-based initiatives, stating that “liberation is incomplete unless it reaches the last person in society,” Prof Reddy highlighted the importance of unity in diversity and asked students to transcend caste, region, and political affiliations on campus and work together for the development of the university and the nation. He appealed to the students of History and Social Work to document oral histories, conduct field studies, and produce research on the Telangana movement and Operation Polo, so that future generations learn an authentic and nuanced account of this chapter.
Mahatma Gandhi University’s observance of Telangana Liberation Day thus blended ceremonial reverence with a forward-looking call to action, positioning students not merely as beneficiaries of freedom but as active architects of the next phase of the region’s development.
