Pavitra garlands offered
TIRUMALA, AUGUST 24, 2026: The three‑day annual Pavitrotsavams entered its second day on Monday at Tirumala.
Sacred and colourful Pavitra Malas (Garlands) were offered to the presiding and utsava deities as part of the observance.
Historical background
Also known as Sarva Doshopansamana Utsavam (Sin-free festival), Pavitrotsavams were prevalent during the 15th–16th centuries and were reinstated by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in 1962.
These utsavams are purification rites and are also described by names such as Dosha Nivarana, Sarva Yagna Phalaprada, Sarva Kamaprada and Sarva Tustikara festival.
Significance of Pavitra Garlands:
The Pavitra Malas are woven out of pure silk threads in black(dark blue), green, yellow, red and white.
These sacred threads are prepared from a high‑grade cotton variety.
Rituals performed:
Early in the morning, Snapana Tirumanjanam was performed to the utsava deities of Sri Malayappa Swamy, Sridevi and Bhudevi. Following the abhishekam, the Pavitra Malas were adorned on the utsava deities.
Both the Senior and Junior Pontiffs of Tirumala, TTD Executive Officer Sri Muddada Ravi Chandra, Additional EO Sri Ch. Venkaiah Chowdary, Deputy EO Sri Lokanatham, temple staff and devotees were present during the ceremonies.
