JAGTIAL, AUGUST 20, 2026: The Department of Zoology and Health Club of the Government Degree College for Women (autonomous) in Jagtial town observed World Mosquito Day on Thursday to raise health awareness among students and protect them from mosquito-borne diseases.
World Mosquito Day is observed every year on August 20 to commemorate Sir Ronald Ross’s historic 1897 discovery that mosquitoes transmit malaria. This crucial day raises awareness of the ongoing threat of mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya.
On this occasion, the speakers said that different mosquitoes also transmit different infections. For example, Anopheles mosquitoes are associated with malaria, while Aedes mosquitoes transmit diseases including dengue and chikungunya. The biting patterns can also differ: Aedes mosquitoes are generally active during the day, while many Anopheles species that transmit malaria are more active from dusk through the night.

They also informed about the most effective measures to check the spread of the mosquito menace. Don’t allow stagnant water to collect in coolers, flower pots, buckets, trays or other containers around the home. Cover water-storage containers, keep drains clear and use screens or mosquito nets where appropriate. Personal protection such as repellents and long-sleeved clothing can also reduce exposure.
For dengue and chikungunya, this is particularly important because Aedes mosquitoes can breed in relatively small amounts of stagnant water around homes and urban neighbourhoods. And prevention cannot be left entirely to individuals. Community-level mosquito control, removal of breeding sites and disease surveillance are also important parts of preventing outbreaks.
The programme was presided over by In-charge Principal Professor Pramod Kumar. Health club coordinator and HOD of the Zoology department G Neeraja, educated the students to observe every Tuesday and Friday as dry days by removing all stagnant water. The faculty members N Sangeeta Rani, G Sreelatha, K Ramachandram, D. Sujatha, V Jamuna, V Varaprasad and S Mallikarjun also participated in the programme.
