Seizes around Rs. 5 lakhs worth of PVC wires and cables
HYDERABAD, FEBRUARY 24, 2026: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Hyderabad Branch Office, conducted a Search and Seizure operation on Monday at a cable wire manufacturing unit in the Charlapally Industrial Area for violation of the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. The enforcement operation was carried out under the direction of P.V. Srikanth, Director & Head, and led by Rakesh Tanneeru, Director, along with other team members.
During the raid, a total of 200+ boxes of PVC insulated electrical cables and wires of various brands were found stored and offered for sale with fake ISI Marks. As all electrical household products fall under the purview of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) issued by the Government of India, BIS certification and the ISI Mark are compulsory. However, the said unit has violated the BIS Act, 2016, by using a fake ISI Mark and license number without obtaining a BIS license and necessary approvals. The seized products, which were being manufactured with a fake BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark), are estimated to be worth more than Rs. 5 lakhs.
This act constitutes a clear violation of Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016, which prohibits the manufacture, sale, store, distribution, or exhibition for sale of goods covered under QCOs without appropriate BIS certification. The Act provides for punishment, including imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of not less than Rs. 2 lakh for the first contravention, and not less than Rs. 5 lakh for subsequent contraventions, which may extend up to ten times the value of the goods. The offence under this provision is cognizable in nature, and BIS will initiate legal proceedings against the violators.
The BIS Act, 2016, provides that the Central Government can make any of the Indian Standards mandatory for compliance through a Quality Control Order (QCO). Standards for 769 products have so far been made mandatory for compliance. The effect of the QCO is that no one can manufacture, import, sell, or exhibit a product covered thereunder without a license from BIS. Punitive measures are provided in the BIS Act for violation of this requirement.
P.V. Srikanth, Director & Head, BIS Hyderabad Branch Office, urged all consumers to check the authenticity of the ISI Mark on products using the BIS CARE App and also verify the hallmark on gold jewellery. He also informed that all mandatory products identified by the Government of India should be manufactured, sold, and stored only with BIS certification. If any consumer finds mandatory products without BIS Standard Marks or with spurious marks, they can complain through the BIS CARE App, and action will be taken. He further urged all manufacturers to obtain BIS certification to help create a quality nation.
