KARIMNAGAR, FEBRUARY 16, 2026: An independent candidate, who had won from the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation’s 10th division, and claimed to attain the post of Karimnagar Mayor with the support of Congress, BRS, MIM and AIFB, has withdrawn from the contest following the political overturns during the election of the Mayor in Karimnagar town on Monday.
Vivekananda Vidyanikethan Educational Institutions and Advita International School Chairman Sowgani Komuraiah has aspired for the party ticket from the BJP and filed the nominations in the Municipal elections from the 10th division with much pomp and gaiety. However, the BJP denied the party ‘B’ form to Mr Komuraiah, following which he remained in the fray as an independent candidate and won the elections.
Later, he immediately changed his attitude following the influence of some of the Congress leaders and decided to attain the post of the Mayor with the support of Congress, BRS, MIM, AIFB and Independents. Accordingly, he had organised camps in Hyderabad with the elected corporators.
Ministers Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Ponnam Prabhakar and others took the issue seriously and decided to deny the chances of the BJP from attaining the Mayor post and encouraged Komuraiah. However, at the last minute, the BRS was discouraged from supporting Komuraiah, who is influenced by the Congress party. The BRS stated that they would remain neutral and abstain from the elections.
Following this, Mr Komuraiah remained as a mute spectator as an Independent in the elections after taking the oath as the corporator in the special Municipal council meeting.
Shocked over the development, Mr Komuraiah had withdrawn from the contest of Mayor post after organising the camp with the corporators with the support of Ministers. Following the rejection of the Mayor post by Komuraiah, the Congress party had projected the candidature of Akula Narmada, who was defeated as the BRS had abstained from voting.
Disillusioned over the political developments, Mr Komuraiah has decided to remain as ‘Independent’ corporator forever and strive for the development of his 10th municipal division which is plagued with several problems ,including bad roads and poor civic amenities.
