It may be mentioned here that the state government issued orders stating that February 4 be observed annually as “Telangana Social Justice Day” to commemorate the passage of the caste census and SC sub-classification reports in the Legislative Assembly on this day. In recognition of the government’s commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusive development, February 4 will be marked each year with official ceremonies, awareness programmes, lectures, and cultural events.
It may be recalled that the Congress-led government in Telangana has promised to conduct a caste census and undertake SC sub-classification if it is voted to power in Telangana during the 2023 Assembly polls. Accordingly, the state government initiated steps to conduct a caste census and undertake SC sub-categorisation. It conducted a caste census between November and December 2024 and appointed a one-man judicial commission in November 2024 to submit a report on SC sub-classification. The government received caste census and SC sub-categorisation reports on February 2 and 3 this year. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy immediately convened a special session of the Legislative Assembly on February 4 and tabled the resolutions in the House seeking approval for both reports. The House approved both resolutions by a voice vote on February 4.
