
The scheme will benefit over 3.10 crore people, accounting for nearly 85 percent of Telangana state’s population
Refuting BRS MLA’s allegation on water shortage and confusing people in Karimnagar town, the Minister assures adequate water supply till July
KARIMNAGAR, APRIL 01, 2025: Stated to be the first of its kind in the country, the Telangana state government has formally launched the distribution of fine rice (sanna biyyam) to the white ration card holders free of cost.
Accordingly, Minister for Transport and BC Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar has formally launched the distribution of fine rice to the ration card holders in the Housing Board colony in Karimnagar town on Tuesday. Manakondur legislator Dr Kavvampalli Satyanarayana, Additional Collector Laxmi Kiran, Karimnagar RDO Maheshwar, DSO Narsing Rao, Civil supplies DM Rajanikanth and others were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Prabhakar said that the government will supply six kilograms of fine rice per person per month free of cost through PDS to all eligible ration card holders and
He said that the farmers had produced 72 lakh metric tonnes of fine rice during the khariff season and ensured that 34 lakh metric tonnes of fine rice were available for distribution through PDS. He also claimed that the Telangana government had given Rs 500 per quintal as a bonus to farmers for producing a fine variety of paddy worth over Rs 36 crore in the state.
Terming the scheme as “historic” one taken by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Mr Prabhakar said that even the poor will eat the rice that rich people consume through this scheme. Reacting to the allegations made by BRS Karimnagar MLA Gangula Kamalakar that the Karimnagar town would face a severe water crisis during this summer season, the Minister clarified that there was no need to worry about the supply of an adequate quantity of drinking water to the people of the Karimnagar town till July 2025.
Flaying the BRS leaders for confusing the people with false allegations on shortage of water supply, the Minister said that the LMD reservoir was having 5.70 tmcs of water and additionally they have 8.78 tmcs of water in Mid Manair dam and there was not to worry for the supply of adequate water during the summer season. Karimnagar Urban bank association chairman Gaddam Vilas Reddy, former corporators Akula Padma, Prakash, Nethikunta Yadaiah,, Congress leaders Mallikarjuna Rajender, Akarapu Bhaskar Reddy, Macharla Prasad and others were also present.
